Where are the Volunteers?

After being inundated with the calls for volunteers to help with the Fargo flood fight for the last month, I have to wonder a little bit.  If there are no volunteers, maybe the residents and businesses in Fargo dont care about saving thier homes and businesses.  So, why in the hell should anybody else?  I for one will not spend 10 seconds this year helping fargo!  If they refuse to help themselves and just rely on the charity of others year after year, I hope they float!

Are you having a bad day? ; )  Usually the volunteers don't show up in full force until they are absolutely needed! Plus after doing this so many times in the last years I would guess they are burnt out! Hopefully they get through it this year and get some permanent protection put in so they can take a breather!

Two things, we are not seeing a large turn out during the week, but Sat they did. Things are a bit different when the water is rising and danger is lurking. Myself I have not been up and maybe will this Sat depending on work. But regardless the flood talk is wearing on people, and most are monitoring and hoping for the best.

But besides even if we do not get the 1 million if they are needed they will be filled!
In my lifetime I have seen fence row to fence row farming and the return of CRP and game to the landscape.Now we face again the prosepect of fence row to fence row again! Sportsman are our own worst enemy in that we fail to look forward and focus to much on the now!

Joel was talking about this on his show the other day.  The answer probably lies with the "urgency" issues.  That and I think contrary to some, the media really isn't putting much "clout" in this flood.  I think they think it isn't going to be a big deal so why worry about it.

Perhaps that isn't quite the way to say it but being a talk radio listener and a manager of a website there is half the "interest" in the flood fight this year.  Of course, in fairness, some of it could be because of the somewhat ideal conditions the last three to four weeks.  Minus, of course, this weather event we currently experiencing.  Maybe this will be what gets the media chattering again.

I suspect the media and city discussion will increase once the melt begins.  For all good reason I hope the flood does not get as bad as some forecasts still suggest.  On the other hand, I hope folks don't take the "victory" of last year as some sort of token of what is to come this year.  Preparedness is important no matter what the forecast may be.  So far so good but it is still a week or so out before a major thaw will occur and who knows what the weather is going to offer up in the next few weeks.  One storm could have Fargo scrambling.

Am I having a bad day?  No not really.

"Usually the volunteers don't show up in full force until they are absolutely needed!"  Exactly!!  The city is bagging right now and it seems the residents that would be most affected ( also the ones we will see on the news during the flood) dont care and refuse to put in thier time.

"  Yes I am burnt out (I am not a Fargo resident).  I (and 10 others along with our skidsteers, payloader and boat) fight the water every year it gets bad.  On our dime, so dont for a second start thinking I dont care.   

Hopefully they get through it this year and get some permanent protection put in so they can take a breather!"  With thier refusal to begin preparations it is obvious that they EXPECT the brigades to show up and save them.  I have my own flood preparations to make,(the wrong side of the WF diversion) by Friday I will have protected myself.  The residents of Fargo, with this much notice, should at least make a half-assed effort to help themselves. 

""I hope they float" ?  Nice, real nice! ; )"  Wasnt really meant to be nice.  I really dont care what you think.  I have fought more miles of flood than you, thats a fact!  It would make it easier if Fargo would spend a little time helping themselves.  Even so, we will stage north of Christine again this year (its a good spot becuase we can move quickly from there in the early stages)

hmmmmmmmmm.....i must say that CPETE2 you are really coming off as a dbag and i am so glad that you make sure everyone knows how great of a person you are and how much you help others....volunteers usually dont need to be recognized but i am glad that you feel the need to make sure that we know you are AWESOME....good thing for you to say that you hope thousands of families lose their homes....yep dbag

Well I volunteered last year, I kinda have it in my head I don't think i will bust my butt as hard this yr. First off when this years sandbagging started maybe some of the people that live Right on the River should have been standing in Line at sandbag Central to help pre-fill bags.They are the ones that should have been the leaders. Also with all the work places still open, I am pretty sure nobody is going to cash in Vacation for this yet. Also back to the River Residents, if they weren't throwing a fit, maybe we could have made an easy Flood Protection Decision and went with what Works, and tested last yr. I Dont get why we can't just Build a Dike and Flood Walls like GF and EGF. NOPE we gotta leave those Beautiful Homes on the river so they can show off to all their Friends. Well.... Sorry, we can Lay Clay down the Streets right in front of there Houses, and hold the water on River Side! Look at the Recreation that the "Greenway" created in the Grand Cities, Golf Courses actually have some Terrain, nice Walking Biking paths, and a Beautiful Camp Ground....

on another note wht the hell are they paying  people to VOULENTEER (putting money towards fines, contributing to college organizeations,etc)?????? does this not seem assinine to anyone else?

i have turned the previous paragraph in to 3 parts so i can address each sepereately.

1. if the residents were not AT WORK or packing up all of there things out of there basements you can bet your bottom dollar there would be a shovel in there hands filling bags tossing bags and stacking bags...not to mention when the watter does come babysitting pumps 24/7 while you are resting you sore voulenteering back

2. long story short to get anything done you hafta go through so much rigamarole and BS, you hafta talk to 27 peole that apparently DO NOT communicate with eachother that is is nearly imposible to get anyhthig done in a timely manner

3. incase you have not been watching the news from you flood proof bunker... we are working on perminent flood protection but as even a bufoon like yourself must know, said flood protection is 6 to 10 years out due to beaurocracy

For those of us who know the city officials in Fargo and have heard from them how close we came to being another GF last year. The fact they are trying to be as proactive as they can is not a surprise. There is also a lot less sand bags going to needed with the actions and plans they have implemented. Then tonight we hear that FEMA funding for 40 homes in the river corridor on the buyout list was not approved. Not because the Sen is not willing to spend the money simply that it was tagged onto a bill that it should not have been.

I have lived in this area for over 20 years, I have helped in many of fights against the rivers for friends and people I did not know. I will however not help the people who built in areas after the 97 flood. In my opinion both the city and county screwed up as well as the people who decided to build in those high flood prone areas regardless how high up they made their homes.

But back to the volunteer issue, it always has been a need to get people moving to help. Myself, physically I cannot do what I have done in the past. So I will do other things if needed. Filling of sandbags at one of the stations is about it. I do not think I can do the building anymore. After last year, a lot of us came to that realization. Fargo and Moorhead have been lucky in dodging the bullet, but that luck has had a lot to do with the college and high schools in the area as well as support from outside. Last year people from the Twin Cities and other area came and helped.

It will get done if it is needed, hopefully we will not see much above 35-36 ft. But the weather pattern is shaping up to hit us hard again.

So gripe about the lack of volunteers or why the city is paying for some of the bags to be filled, it really does not matter. Unless we get a real curve ball the city and the people of this region will rise again push back against the Red one more time

On the news tonight I saw prisoners filling sand bags,  I would like to see more of that.  Could even import some from other towns and put them on a chain gang and make them earn their lunch like the rest of us have to.

I work in the local law enforcement community so people's actions and the political areana frustrates me at times to. I hear you but you have to remember there is several ways to get to the end result. They are not doing it the way you would like to see it done. I would like to thank you for the help in the past with the flood effort. and If you ever need help let us know and we will always be there for you. Sometimes we all do thankless jobs/work.

Geothermal-We will continue to use the inmates for sandbaging until the flood waters receed. Thanks for everyones support.

i don't understand why the diversion is such a big deal. nd wants it on the mn side and vise versa. it has obviously helped in west fargo, why don't they just build another one and get it over with.

what would be nice is if they could build some sort of reservoir south of fargo a few miles. something as wide as ashtabula just not as long. might be tough to do being as there isn't much elevation change in that area, but think about it this way. you live in fargo, you drive 150+ miles to go to Devils Lake to fish. or, you could drive 10 miles south and be on the water catching walleyes.

only problem i could see would be that it would also become another place for recreation. skiing, tubing, wakeboarding. which is fun to do but not fun to be around when you are trying to fish.

Catmechanic Personaly i would like to see a complete vally flood control system.The just dump the water downstream and piss on the people downstream attitude is the problem.

makeing a resevoir south would be great but the same thing would happen they would be managed for recreation instead of flood control (the same thing they do now resevoirs west of fargo) complete bsif you ask me.
 I am allready tired of hearing fargo whine for sandbaggers
simple solution MOVE THE HOMES OFF THE RIVER BANKS
