Vexilar Tri-beam Transducer help

I have a older FL-18 with a 12 degree transducer and I've been through the FAQ's on the Vexilar site. Now here's the problem: I'm having trouble marking fish in deeper lakes. Has anyone upgraded to the new tri-beam transducer or using a newer model with the tri-beam? Will the tri-beam transducer work on my older machine? Does the 8 degree cone allow you to mark fish in deep water better? I define deep water as over 40 feet deep as I do some trout fishing and in the deeper lakes they can run down at 40 to 150 foot.
Thanks for any help!

Elk hunting at 9000 ft is easy. Dragging that elk out at 9000 ft is hard!
