Has anybody installed Hayfield brand vinyl windows? This is the brand we are thinking about using when we replace ours this summer. The dealer that sells them says they are great windows and the other place in town that sells windows says they are crap. I'm not sure who to believe. I checked online and the reviews looked good but I think it's better to talk to somebody who has them in ND. Randy

re: If you have knowledge or advice on replacement home windows (please click here)

posted by: Traxion. This could be long so bear with me. I work in residential construction, both new and remodeling. We've used a large array of windows over the past few year (matching in remodeling, homeowner requests, etc.). Here is my take.

Personally, I am not a huge fan of vinyls. The cheap vinyls are 100% junk. Price is right but you get what you pay for. The one vinyl I have used and do believe is a good product are the previously mentioned Simonton windows. They are a mid range vinyl, pricing is good and the product is quality. Norandex sells them, one week lead time last order I made as well!

When you get into wood/clad or wood/composite windows, there are a lot of good options. I believe the Marvin clad windows are the best out there, bar none. Cost is comparable to other premium product lines from Pella, Andersen, etc. but most consumers just won't spend the money. We have used Pella (all lines), Andersen, and Jeldwen and are satisfied with most of the products offered by each. The only product I would avoid are the vinyl clad Andersen 400 series, just junk for the money IMO. I have never used Minnkota, not offered in my area.

For our new construction we have been going with Marvin Integrity. We started with them over five years ago and have been 100% satisfied with the products. Price is competitive and the products have been super reliable. We've had no problems with condensation, though we install HRV's in almost all new homes. As discussed, humidity is the #1 cause of condensation, espescially in the cold climates. I love the products and have nothing but good to say about them.

One thing that has not been mentioned is window type and how it relates to energy efficiency. Sliding windows are absolutely the worst design for energy efficiency. Air leakage is just a fact of life with them. Casement windows provide the best energy efficiency of all types because they have a positive seal. Double hungs also are efficient and seal well. It absolutely amazes me when I see a $400,000 house with window packages that cost $4,000 and consists of vinyl sliders.

Finally, I have not seen good results from locally produced window companies. There are some companies that build custom vinyl units and every one I have seen are junk.

Choices are nearly unlimited, just remember you do get what you pay for. Windows are an investment and add greatly to the value of your home. Going with good quality adds resale and reduces utility bills, long term benefits always outproduce the short term (price) benefits. Good luck!

re: If you have knowledge or advice on replacement home windows (please click here)

posted by: CORKSCREW.
I tried to buy them direct from them and they wouldn't sell to me. they only sell through their dealers. I was a builder and they wouldn't set me up as a dealer either.
rackum04 Said:
Not just for the windows but your health.

A simple way to avoid condensation in your windows is to remove window screens for the winter. If you have inside screens and leave them in most likely they will have more moisture on them than windows without the screens. Screens act as a barrier that keeps the heat from the glass. On any cold day I can see the difference between the screened versus not screened glass. While removing the screens may not eliminate the frost it certainly can cut down the amount. Pulling curtains open will also help. A yearly inspection of the sills and a little varnish can go a long way to preserving the windows.
re: If you have knowledge or advice on replacement home windows (please click here)

posted by: rackum04.

re: If you have knowledge or advice on replacement home windows (please click here)

posted by: rackum04.
