Red River (North) - Tuesday, August 9, 2011

Report Details
hey guys, ive been hearing alot about how great the cat fishing is over that area.  I am looking to make a camping trip this week, before i start school with a couple of buddies, and was wondering if you guys could help me get some info.  Any  campgrounds around the fishing areas?  where would be some good areas to fish from shore?  I have never fished a river for cats and from what ive been told, as well as read, the cats in this river are huge.  I'll be making the drive from Minot, and any information would be greatlty appreciated.  Thanks once again!

It's flooding pretty nasty here in Fargo... but it's on the way down. Not sure about Grand Forks which I assume is where you're headed.

River going down means every shore place will be slimy/nasty until the winds dry and no rain comes. If you can hold off two weeks and we get no rain it could be awesome. But as for now, the bite might be getting toward prime time (late August usually is) but access/hassle is high.

Maybe some of the river rats can point you toward some tributaries.

If you come try to bring LIVE frogs and/or crayfish for bait. Those are my favorite August baits.

thanks for the heads up guywhofishes.  I know i can net some crawfish overnight up at lake darling, but i have not seen any frogs in the area, other than when it rained alot last year.  Any tips on where i can obtain this bait of choice?  Also If i do get enough info to head out there i will probably go to grand forks.  Nay information would be greatly appreciated.

Bring a bait bucket with a lid, stop at some sloughs on your way to GF and walk around them.  You should get more frogs than you can use.  Also through a hook and crawler in while fishing you should be able to catch a sucker or goldeneye for cut bait.  Can't help with the camping though, not very familair with GF.

The best camping is the Red River Recreation Area in East Grand Forks, get a tent spot and you can shore fish all night long if you want.  The river will be a bit muddy but accessible. Plan on using at least 5 oz of weight to stay in the strike zone.

For bait I would just buy some suckers when you get here, maybe pick up a few frogs and you can catch some goldeyes if you want.  Personally I would get some suckers for cut bait and maybe catch a few frogs.  Fishing has has been pretty good along the shoreline breaks with the higher water.

Hope that helps
