Red River (North) - Monday, September 19, 2011

Report Details

Action is still good for Walleye and Sauger. I had to slow my presentation down quite a bit, and I eventually switched to a floating jig setup. Man, the pike are crazy right now, and the drum are starting to turn on as well. I hopped back and forth between the ND and MN side sandbars, and after little success I started fishing the downstream side of the sandbars, casting UPSTREAM towards them. First time I've ever experimented casting like that and I was rewarded.

The warmup this week could possibly slow things down a bit but I'm not guessing it will be by much. Water temp yesterday was 60. Larger fish were shallow, and smaller fish were deeper, right at 7 feet (in the middle of the sandbar). I'm thinking it was around 2 to 3 feet on the shoreline, and I popped a few 16-18 inch walleye there.

Fatheads out-produced suckers.

And how, exactly, does one locate these sandbars? Sonar, shoreline evidence, probing around? Any "typical" layout or scenario as for where they occur?

Evidence. Your "normal" summer river levels (low water) when Catfishing should set off big red flags when you see those sandbars, gravel bars, etc. Some, if not all, will have clam shells on them when they're exposed.

Most will also be located very close to shore. In another week or so (just a guess) I'll be able to see a TON more sandbars just driving to and from work.

Or, if you fish a LOT by yourself.........when on your way back to the boat ramp (idle speed in most areas) you get "beached"......you'll have to use your Oar to sorta wedge yourself out, and if the paddle goes in like a knife through hot butter.....it's not a sandbar. BUT if if feels hard as concrete,.......she be a SANDBARRRRR!

Hmmm your stretch of river sure is a lot different than mine! Wow, sand bars all over? I've not seen that just north of Fargo, or south for that matter.
