Red River (North) - Tuesday, June 12, 2012

Amphibians have been the bait of choice for cats the last week. Action has been great, with numerous doubles and triples. The night bite has been good also. Big fish are still there but I've had to work for them. Shallow slack water areas have been good but also log jams and heavier current (the main channel) concentrating on holes is also producing fish.

Water temp last Saturday evening was 77, so when I jumped in the river to try and get a clients 20 pound plus catfish unwrapped from a tree, it was nice and cozy as I dove to the bottom in 8 FOW. Although I didn't get to the snag in time and the fish broke free from the hook, I had to at least make an effort as we lost the 3 or 4 big fish that they had on. Again though, it was a good day with more action than they could handle at times.

Most fish are biting light, some are more aggressive (the rod holder shakers) and you'll hear the rod bending/creaking before you see it. Goldeye's been working ok, sucker......well not so much. Action should pick up very soon as we are getting some warmer weather. Starting now, any time it rains, look to Frogs or Water Dogs. Before or after a good rain they'll more than likely be the top producer.

Good luck!

Where does a guy go to find the big cats around here? Are there any Flathead or Blues in the Red River or anywhere around Fargo?

My first time fishing on the Red River,

Im new to North Dakota all together. Recently I bought an inflatable boat to get out on the water. Since all I have is a car and apartment that all I am able to use/store/transport.

My first time out didnt go the best. I went down to the little park by main st and headed up river. It took me about an hour to get past the first couple bends, I was getting tired and decided to anchor down and try it out. So I set my bobber at around 8ft, hooked a fathead minnow and let it drift back down stream 150 yards or so. I got a couple small hits but with the distance it wasnt enough to actually hook anything. Aggervated and tired I decided to start heading back. About a 1/4 mile from the dock I stopped for one last try. This time I forgot to tie my anchor down and as we drifted slowly the rope slipped over the edge and I lost it. I was so angry I wasnt even watching my bobber. Next thing I know I looked up and its gone. I closed my bail and waited for the line to go tight, It was running under the boat, I jerked my pole back and set the hook, I could tell this was a nice fish. It spun our raft around and headed to the bottom. At first it was pulling me up stream then it seemed to stop. I dont know what it was, if it was to big of a fish to pull up or if it had wrapped around a tree or even my long lost anchor. My pole was bent in half drag almost maxed out and I couldnt get it to budge, I thought it was snagged so I let off a little and it started to pull back bending the pole again. I fought with it for 30 min or so before I got frustrated and made a rookie mistake, I grabbed the line and pullled up as hard as i could, I broke my line. I will be going back with heavier gear to catch this fish soon.

Fished with Fargo Cat Man yesterday morning from 6-11 in Fargo.  Landed 10 and had a lot of light biters that wouldn't take the bait.  Used frogs, fresh sucker and sour sucker and had about the same number of bites on all.  Sour sucker probably did better than fresh sucker.  Did a lot of moving around, but mostly fished  above structure by deeper water.   Landed fish at pretty much ever spot we stopped.  We'd fish a spot for 10-20 minutes and get the actively-feeding fish out of each spot and move on.

Nothing huge.  Biggest was about 12 and she was so fat she looked about ready to pop.  Most were in the 4-7 pound range.   Other than a little rain, it was nice to get out.   Had a LOT of light biters that wouldn't commit.

I went out today across from the sewage plant in North Fargo again, and still very little success. I caught 1 3lb cat on a chicken liver and that was it. then I moved to the farm house North of there a few miles and no body caught anything, not even on a night crawler. but we did have a suicidal crappie minnow jump into the mud on the bank. I also tried goldeye again, still nothing.

Hi I'm new to fishing in the red river area or FM area. Looking for some advice on places and tackle to use. i like to cast but am perfectly fine with dropping a line out and waiting for a hit. I've been to the mid town dam and the north dam and have only caught moon eye and a carp and a few small cats. what should i use and any other good spots? also are there any lakes or ponds nearby to try out?

Thanks for the advice!

I went out fishing today(5/31/12) from about 12:00pm to 5:30pm. I caught a 2lb cat right away, and a 5lb later. I was using cut goldeye for bait and was fishing the current breaks for the small one, and near a debree jam for the larger one, got a few other hits but thats about it. I thought it was supposed to be better. I was fishing the river across the street from the sewage plant in North Fargo. Did i just go on a bad day or what. Any advice?

As I picked Al and Dianne up from the motel Saturday morning, I couldn't help but poke a little fun at them as they were huddled up next to each other in the parking lot in their camo. "Are we going waterfowl hunting today? Did I miss the memo???" After a few laughs we got loaded up and headed to the ramp.

Last year on the same day, we were dealt with the same weather conditions. Cold, windy, and a few sprinkles here and there. I had a feeling today wouldn't matter and the action would keep us warm. We throw the lines out at the first spot and let them marinate. The pressure was off right away as they couldn't keep up with the rods! The size was very lacking though, and after a few fish 10 pounds and under we move to the next spot. Same old song and dance, tap tap tappy, little one here, decent one there, and I make the call to keep on truckin'...........

I decide to go over to Deer Head Flats. Al & Dianne keep reminding me they don't expect every fish to be big, but it matters to me, I need it for myself and I know deep down a battle with a biggun would make their day even more special. Each one of them has an ultralight out, and a big cat rod. Al catches a few nice chunky 20 inch walleye, and even helped us with our bait inventory, as he brought in a few goldeye. Sitting in the front of the boat with my head in my hands, with that sick feeling in my gut, I start to lose faith (just a little bit) but I hear that un-mistakable sound, the rod creaking from stress, and as I look to the stern of the boat I see,.......it's doubled, peeling out drag........still in the rod holder........."HURRY HURRY HURRY! GRAB IT!!!!!"

Al picks it up and the fight is on. Zzzt, zzzzt,......zzzzzzzzt............it's peeling out drag which is unusual to say the least. You see, my drag is almost non-existant......I got it tightened up pretty much all the way. I like the way the rod is looking, but eventually it stays bent in half. No head shakes. Uh oh. It's caught up in a snag. Well since the action wasn't fast and furious like I was hoping, I figure we better try to salvage our opportunity at this monster. All lines are in the boat except for Al's. Peel up the anchor, start the motor, and try to immitate the Goliath Grouper guides, moving the boat into position, trying from every direction to get the fish out of the snag. No dice. The entire rig eventually comes up, with the bait still on the hook. Dianne ended up catching a nice fish, and after a few smaller ones it was time to move.

At this point, I'm wondering if we shouldn't just fish from shore. The wind is putting a damper on every single location we're fishing. Except one. A little bit south of the Bermuda Log Jam, is a big ol' tree that fell in the main channel last year. "Give her Hell here for 15 minutes and call it a day?" We were cold, hungry, and they need to get to Red Lobster (their annual tradition) before there's an hour wait!

Within 5 minutes the rod is bent in half again. "Grab it! Grab it! WAAAIT! NO NO LEAVE IT!" The fish slammed it and for whatever reason didn't get connected. "Don't worry Al, as long as you didn't reel in any line, this fish will commit within the next few minutes" I don't know if he thought I was just trying to be positive or what, but he nodded his head in agreement. I'm glad I was right, fish on!!!!!!!! Well this fish ended up getting caught in a snag.....again........I didn't care if I had to jump in......we were landing this fish.

It eventually got out of the snag and we were able to land this beast. The mood did a total 180 and idling back to the ramp, we were all smiling, partly from the big fish and partly from exhaustion. Thanks for coming and see you next year guys!

Cleaned some cats yesterday, 3-6 lbs, and found their stomachs absolutely stuffed with what appear to be very small white seeds, possibly elm?  I'm guessing upwards of 50% of the matter in there was seed, the rest unrecognizable but possible insect matter.

The bite has been tough for me and I'm guessing this is part of it.  Anyone know what's going on with the seeds?
