ugh, went out expecting good fishing and I got 4 goldeye, kept 2 for cut bait, used it there but no cats at all, also used a live light northern sucker, minnows on floating jig heads on the bottom, live frogs. also got 3 14 inch saugers, and just as I was leaving and pulling in a line with a jig head and minnow hooked by the tail and it was 5 feet from shore and a 29 inch northern struck it, it still had eggs wierdly enough, and it had 2 hooks in it's gut, a red stinger hook and a medium sized circle hook. as always, I was the only guy there not using spinning reels. snags were bad at times.

I fish the Fargo Moorhead area, is anyone else going out after this storm we had. Is it even worth it? Im guessing the current will be going pretty good for a while.

Went out to try a evening catfish trip. Rods were pretty active all night. Only one taker at the first spot which was a 3lb northern. Next spot only produced bites. The final spot at dusk produced a 4, 8, 11 lb catfish with active rods all night til 10:30 when we left. They seemed to start feeding hard right before the cold front made its way through. We had two strong takers that came off after 5 seconds of fight with circle hooks. I have not seen my rod bend that far and not landed the fish. We launched off the north landing in GF.

I suppose ill try the south landing tomorrow to try to find some spots for Wednesday night Catfish League.

Was out today in the area of Gooseberry park in Moorhead. Had gone out in search of Bluegills and Crappies, but as I had expected the outcome to be, I couldn't find any fish to bite. After some time I switched my target fish and had luck on minnows on a Lindy rig. Ended up catching a nice 18in Walleye and more cats between 12-22in than I cared to count. Does anyone know of anywhere or way to catch panfish on the river? Anything would be great.

I went out on the red lake river last wednesday, and went to my favorite walleye hole and ended up catching 4 nice 10-13" crappies. On thursday  went on the Red River and ened up catching two northern and a couple nice walleyes. Does anybody think since the river has been low this year, its letting some of the not so normal fish you catch thrive now since they dont have to battle the current?

Here Kitty Kitty......

I went to lunch with a good friend yesterday and once we were finished with our meals we both said to each other, "you know, it's pretty nice out, we should probably be out fishing", so it was pretty much decided right there that we'd head out. I've been on a hot bite and everything was ready to go. I even go so far as to tell him how we'd each be battling a fish over 20 pounds within the first 2 minutes of the first spot we fished.

Well, we got to my deep hole which at the bottom has a nasty tree in about 15 FOW and toss the lines out. The rod tips begin to dance and it doesn't look like anything's going to commit. After the 15 minute rule has passed, I decide it's time to relocate. We don't move far, and it's the same type of structure only deeper, sitting in 22 feet and our "spread" is at the bottom in about 18 feet. My corner rod is the first to get worked over HARD. With the tip almost touching the water I grab the rod and it feels like my Gamakatsu Octopus circle hook is attached to a Geo Metro. You can just tell when you have something on that's over 18 pounds. At one point I thought I lost it because it was swimming that fast upstream/towards the boat, but after reeling in the slack line as fast as I could, I realized he was still on. A couple runs later, the 26 pound Cat was in the net.

We camped out for a bit more hoping for another big fish. All signs were pointed towards a total gong show but to our dismay, we only boated a couple 8 to 13 pounders. Time to move again and like before, not too far. This time we're sitting in 15 feet and the Goldeye steaks are marinating in 22 feet. Right smack dab in the middle of the channel. It doesn't take long, maybe 5 minutes and I'm hooked into another giant. Or was I? The fish came to the surface after a decent battle with almost total dead weight and I see it's coming in tail first. What? I can't remember the last time I landed a fish that was NOT hooked directly in the mouth. It's kinda hard to do when fishing with circle hooks.

After a  "beaver style" tail slap to the water, the fish again ran to the bottom and that "I know this is a 22 plus fish" feeling came to me. I was right, after the net scoop we were both drenched from the thrashing 24 pound beast. Time's running out, and after a few more smaller fish in the 8 to 10 pound range I've got to head back to the boat ramp and pick up my wife and daughter for a little cruise. All in all I'd give it a 9 out of 10 for the outing. It's nothing to write home to mom about as far as the action goes, not yet at least. Give it another week (if we have some warm weather) on the other hand, and things should get pretty crazy.

Good luck!

Catfishing has improved over the past week as some warmer temperatures are maintaining water temps in the mid 50s. Fish are being caught near the faster current close to structure like snags, rock piles or some sort of small hole. They seem to be running depths of 12-15 feet of water fairly tight to the structure so be prepared to lose some tackle. Sucker is again the bait of choice but goldey has been working as well. You will still have to endure a lot of pecking and bait stealing in between solid bites but the fish are there and the big hits are getting more prevalent. Big fish seem to have not turned on yet as many of the fish being caught are in the 20-26 inch range with only the occasional fish over 30 inches being caught.

Hit the red at the south dam this morning. Lots and lots and lots of catfish. I was hopin for a walleye or two but nothin there. the water was up a little from a week ago but not bad and clarity didnt seem to be as bad as some are reporting. i used a lindy setup with a plain red hook and fatheads through the tail. i didnt wait 10 minutes between bites it was ridiculous. All cats were in the 1 - 4 lbs. range. Where the walleyes!?!?!

As predicted last week, just a little sunshine and some warm days would turn on the catfish and it did.  Water temps have reached the mid-50s and the catfish have responded. Good numbers are coming in, with a few bigger fish in the mix. Fish shallower water near drop-offs just out of the faster water. Some sort of structure, such as a snag or rock, helps, too. Suckers are the bait of choice but goldeyes also are working. As always, especially if fishing from a boat, stay on the move and try different areas until finding fish. The river flow is about perfect for this time of year.
