Went east of Minot last Wed setting up deer stands (hope they aren't stolen). Approx. 5 miles southeast of Granville. We saw 2 mule deer fawns cross the road. They stood in the ditch. Wish I had a camera. And Yes they were mule deer!Tall ears. Hopped. No white tails up. 20 ft off the road. Saw one doe 4 years ago 5 miles further east while we were working a dog. We thought that was a real rarity. These 2 fawns had to have a mom and a Dad in the area. Anybody else seen mule deer this far east?

More are making it across the river to the east every year. Last year hunting north of Bowden, I saw two mule deer, both forkys. I got one on the video camera, he was running with a nice 5x5 whitetail and a doe.
The kill is the satisfying, indeed essential, conclusion to a successful hunt. But, I take no pleasure in the act itself. One does not hunt in order to kill, but kills in order to have hunted. Then why do I hunt? I hunt for the same reason my well-fed cat hunts...because I must, because it is in the blood, because I am the decendent of a thousand generations of hunters. I hunt because I am a hunter.- Finn Aagard

Eastern mule deer ? Yes, I almost fell on one last fall pheasant hunting. Mulie, you ask? Antler size and spread, no white backside, and long ears. Great buck, a mule deer. Lived in Montana and know what they look like. Where you ask ? Ten miles north of Valley City, n. d. Going to find him this fall.....

Actually there are mule deer shot in the eastern part of the state every year. The ones I've heard of are usually does, not sure why that is, but I hear of a couple every year. I heard of one in MN a few years ago that must have swam the mighty red.

In my anecdotal observations, the mule deer are expanding their range in western ND. I went twenty years without seeing mulies on the eastern part of my stepfather's land NE of New Town, now for the last 7 years about half the deer there are mulies. Starting to make it tough to decide where to apply for the ol buck tag.

Probably 12 years ago I had one walk into my goose decoys when I was hunting north of the Greene crossing on Lake Darling.

We also saw a mule deer doe on the Buffalo Lodge road north of Granville a couple of weeks ago. I've seen several mule deer on Clark Salyer Refuge over the years.

Allen,

Yeah, it's pretty neat hunting up in the New Town area.  I guess that's why it's becoming one of the hardest units to draw a buck tag now a days.  But yeah, sure is fun when a guy has to take a second to identify the deer.

"it's a mule deer!"  or wait "it's a whitetail".  Good ole days.  Guess I'll have to stop putting in for the dang badlands all the time and re-live them sometime soon!
