I am heading up to LOW Thursday night, this will be my first time fishing in open water. Fished it twice this past winter through the ice. will be heading out of Zipple bay. Anybody been up there yet this year? Or any suggestions on where to start? I guess our main focus is walleye but my brother and I are suckers for big pike. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You need three colors to fish LOW, gold, gold, and gold on gold. Spinners on bouncers work when you see fish suspended off the bottom a little, then mid-afternoon, you might not graph any fish, they are on the bottom, switch to a lindy rig or a slip sinker/spinner. When using spinners I've had the best luck with crawlers for bait, but this might be a little early, when using Lindy's minnows have been the ticket, big lively shiner minnows. If you have quick change spinner blades the larger size blades have produced larger fish, I've also caught some huge perch on a spinner blade so big it wouldn't fit in their mouth. Gold is obviously my favorite, but glow/white, chartruce, purple, orange and blue spinner blades have also produced well at times, gold is my go to color though. I've caught some larger pike (36"-38") trolling reef runners around the edges of 12 mile and 16 mile reefs, the best color was purple with a hot pink belly. I've also caught quite a few saugers with the same technique/bait/color and in the same area.

Horsager,

Thanks for the info. Heading up tonight after work. It should be a fun weekend. I will let you know how we did, and hopefully post some pics.

Thanks again.

Showtime

We had pretty good luck. Nothing of any size, the biggest was just under 19, but we managed to catch fish, keep our limit, and have a great time doing it. Best part about it all was getting to spend time with my dad and my brother. Friday was a pretty nice day, and Friday night was beautiful. The wind picked up Sat. and Sun. but it was still managable. Horsager was right, we caught the majority on hammered gold spinners. Thanks for the tip. Well I better get back to work. Have to put in a couple of days, then it is off to Tobin Lake, SK. Friday afternoon.
