Well where to start, to make a long story short, I have wanted to buy a 280 moutain rifle for a long time, but it has been a little to spendy for me the past few years. Well last fall I went in a looked at one and it was 650 which wasn't so bad but I didn't get around to buying it. So now I do have the money and I went into scheels to buy it the other day and come to find out the price went up $100 since last fall. So I decided to look around a little more, so when I got home I called walmart and they are selling the same gun for $596. So I called scheeles back to see if they would match the price and the guy on the phone got pretty defensive about it and flat out told me no we can't come close to that. So what I am saying if you are going to but a gun check out walmart before you go to scheels or cabelas, you will probably be suprised of the price difference.

Why is it that walmart can sell it so much cheaper? The only thing I can think of is because Walmart deals in bulk so in the long run they make money on it.

David, are you dealing with the one in GF or Fargo. If you want to buy it from scheels (they usually give a discount on scopes and accessories bought that day) I can put you in touch with some guys in Fargo. Unless walmart is selling it for less then their price these guys at Scheel's usually match it. Just let me know if you want to get in touch with these guys in Fargo.

I am guessing you are right on with Walmart being able to buy things cheaper because they buy in bulk. Is it also possible they are not the best from the factory, maybe minor defects that make them sell cheaper?

To recieve the best pricing on Remington guns you have to buy an equal dollar amount of Reminton ammunition. It may also have to do with when the rifle was brought into the store, it could be that Wal-Mart has some guns left over from last year, at last year's prices. It is possible that a gun on the shelf from last year, at full retail, is cheaper than what cost is for a store to bring one in this year. I talked with a guy at a gun shop and he told me almost every major manufaturer took a 12%-15% price increase for '06, you can expect to see that passed along to the consumer since the margin on most guns isn't 12%-15%. I'm not trying to defend anyone, just trying to explain how your situation may have occured.

I forgot all about the fact that it could be a hold over. Another nice thing from buying from a "gun store" is that if you have questions/problems they are a lot more willing to help out if the salesmen remembers you buying the gun. They will go out of their way to help a good customer.

dwatne, my gut feeling on this is that the gun would show up at Wal-Mart and be a different price than you were quoted. Pricing changes for '06 are just starting to take effect now. In many cases retailers quote the last price in their system for any particular item, and if the price changes you are greeted with a higher price when you show up to pick up your special order. Scheel's, Cabela's, and almost every other reatailer will only match price on an item that is in stock specifically for this reason. I even know of a few cases when retailers would not match internet prices on in stock items because they would lose money. It is a very rare occasion that you would get any retailer to match a price if it means LOSING money, most will match down to a break even point, few will match and lose money, and none will special order at a loss. Good luck with your purchase, as I said before, I'm not trying to defend anyone, just trying to explain how this can happen from time to time.

When I bought my 270 WSM Browning A Bolt about two years ago I priced them at Scheels and at Walmart in Farog and found that Walmart was about 100 bucks cheaper I went to Scheels, told them.. they called to walmart and gave me the difference... the guy at Scheels said it was getting pretty close to their cost, but not there yet...
