am i the only one who questions how they get their numbers of animals taken? the surveys they send out only seem to hit my mailbox every 3 years, and that is just for deer or antelope. to get true numbers wouldnt they send surveys to everyone whom purchased a license?
realy gets me at how they say how many pheasants were shot in a year. wish i could make up numbers and get paid for it.

If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you can read this in english, thank a vet.

Interviewing every hunter is impractical. They collect data from a predetermined sample set and extrapolate data from it. The evil of statistics I'm afraid.

The event of the existing crisis will be decisive in the opinion of mankind of the practicability of our federal system of government. Great is the stake placed in our hands; great is the responsibility which must rest upon the people of the United States. Let us realize the importance of the attitude in which we stand before the world. Let us exercise forbearance and firmness. I would think they could require you to do an online interview as part of getting your license or something.  then they could get everybody involved

Pheasant counts are not so called "tallied" by the surveys they send out. The biggest thing for them is listening to the "cocks cocking" procedure. That has held itself tried and true over the past... 20+ years or so? Also, I would say for number of deer taken surveys, they dont really rely on that as a huge count either. How many guys actually fill that survey out, and how many just throw it away? Again, im sure most of their numbers can be based on aerial surveys, which in itself, has been fairly accurate over the years, along with wardens in the area checking people out and seeing if they have filled a tag or not. Obviously with your last comment, you have little to NO knowledge about how the game and fish conduct surveys. Please do some more research and use your head before saying such nonsense again.

That would work. Make it similar to the HIP.

I would be happy with a program like that. Right now there is just not a cost effective way to get everything out to everyone. However, I highly doubt an online program will be involved, yes I know having internet access is a "norm", but how many older folks dont have the net that still hunt? I would imagine a few. For the overall majority it could prob. work though.

Well, like how I answered the OP. That is the evil of statistics. Rarely do statisticians get info from the entire population. They define a sample set and take what data they can from that. I would be interested to see what their +/- and confidence intervals are on some of the studies.

I got one for upland, deer and waterfowl last year but just waterfowl this year. Do they not send them to the same people every year?
If everyone focused on the important things in life the world would have a shortage of fishing poles.

I think the sample set is randomly picked. I havent received an upland or waterfowl one but I have received them for whitetail rifle, archery and archery pronghorn. And as an added bonus I was selected for the USFWS dove one.

Again at the G&F Advisory meetings this issue has been addressed. Cost of setting up the data base and program is costly and it is in the works. However, the samples they do take have been a reliable product, much like the polling data that is done during election cycles. They have a margin of error+/-  that has been pretty accurate.

Now what they could do is set up registration stations like many other states do. But do we really need to spend the money on this when a survey has proven to be a reliable indicator?
In my lifetime I have seen fence row to fence row farming and the return of CRP and game to the landscape. Now we face again the prosepect of fence row to fence row again! Sportsman are our own worst enemy in that we fail to look forward and focus to much on the now!

i think our mule deer population is worth spending some time on --- send back your license or bring us the head.

PS -- the MN app for android is nice regarding the lakes.  Same with the online version -- i like to read about the lakes.  It would be nice to see what the biologists r saying about the lakes in ND.   The #1 armchair biologist on here has his trap open all the time!!!!
Stay thirsty my friends
