DNR Gives Holiday Hints

STATE PARKS PASS
The Minnesota State Park annual permit makes a great holiday gift. For just $25, purchasers will be giving an unlimited number of visits to Minnesota's 72 state parks and recreation areas for a whole year. Special holiday combination packages are also available.

CROSS COUNTRY SKI PASSES
The Great Minnesota Ski Pass entitles holders to use nearly 1,600 miles of public ski trails throughout the state. Cross-country skiers, age 16 and older, must have a ski pass on most public ski trails.

DNR RECREATION MAPS
Public Recreation Information Maps (PRIM) is a resource for all outdoor enthusiasts who are looking for public recreational lands and facilities, whether they are anglers looking for lake public accesses, hunters looking for public hunting grounds, or snowmobilers, skiers and hikers looking for public trails.

The 51 different maps, which combined cover all of Minnesota, contain public ownership data, including federal, state and county lands. All maps have been updated within the last four years to provide the most current information for planning an outing. Each map displays parks, forests, scientific and natural areas, waterfowl production areas and wildlife management areas. In addition, each map shows facilities such as state trails, fishing piers, campgrounds, historic sites and more.

MINNESOTA CONSERVATION VOLUNTEER MAGAZINE
The DNR's "Minnesota Conservation Volunteer" magazine is the perfect holiday gift for outdoors enthusiasts of all types and ages. Cross country skiers, hunters, anglers, birders, gardeners, natural history buffs, and other lovers of the outdoors will enjoy the Conservation Volunteer's beautifully photographed stories about Minnesota's woods, waters and wildlife.

BOOKS ON OUTDOORS TOPICS
The DNR offers a variety of books on the outdoors ranging from bird feeding to landscaping to nature appreciation. The books can be purchased at major bookstores throughout the state and from online booksellers.

"Wild About Birds - the DNR Bird Feeding Guide" by Carrol Henderson, DNR Nongame Wildlife Program. This book will help readers increase the number of species using their feeders. The book includes woodshop basics for construction of 26 different feeders and tips on 44 types of food, plus detailed descriptions and photos of almost all the feeder-using species east of the Rocky Mountains.

"Landscaping for Wildlife" by Carrol Henderson, DNR Nongame Wildlife Program. This best-selling book is packed with color photos and diagrams to show how to attract wildlife to property using inexpensive, easy-to-follow landscaping plans.

"Woodworking for Wildlife" by Carrol Henderson, DNR Nongame Wildlife Program. Woodworking for Wildlife includes diagrams for building bird houses, nest boxes and platforms to attract and keep your favorite wildlife coming back to your property.

"Traveler's Guide to Wildlife in Minnesota" This guide shows were readers can observe and photograph wildlife at 120 sites in Minnesota. Each site entry reports what makes the area special, provides maps and directions, and offers information about facilities and recreational opportunities.

"Lakescaping for Wildlife & Water Quality" represents six years of research and collaborative efforts of Carrol Henderson, DNR Nongame Wildlife Program; Carolyn Dindorf, award-winning soil and water conservationist; and Fred Rozumalski, highly acclaimed landscape ecologist.
